Abstract: | This study explores how K-pop fan engagement on Facebook influences
interpersonal relationships among Myanmar enthusiasts, emphasizing the platform's
role in fostering community and belonging. Using qualitative research design, the
study gathers insights through in-depth interviews with 12 participants actively
engaging in K-pop Facebook groups. The research addresses four key themes:
building friendships, emotional support and sense of belonging, transitions from
online to offline interactions, and challenges faced by fans on the platform.
The findings highlight Facebook’s pivotal role as a medium for initiating and
nurturing friendships, with many connections transitioning into offline relationships.
Shared interests in K-pop act as a foundation for strong interpersonal bonds, while
Facebook’s features, such as group chats and event pages, enable consistent
interactions. Emotional support from fan communities fosters a sense of belonging,
boosting participants’ mental well-being and confidence. Nevertheless, challenges like
fan conflicts, scams, and managing diversity underscore the complexities of social
engagement on the platform.
The study underscores Facebook’s function as a central social media platform for
relationship-building and a bridge to offline interactions, significantly contributing to
fans' well-being and social skills. |
