The purpose of this independent study was to compare performances of investment portfolios that consisted of several asset classes and had different portfolio rebalancing policies by applying Markowitz Portfolio Theory to construct the optimal portfolios. The samples of asset classes included Government Bond, Corporate Bond, Thai Equity, Global Equity and Property Fund. The study was initiated by collecting historical data of closing prices of all representative indexes from January 1, 2010 – December 31, 2014. 13 optimal portfolios then were complied and administered from January 1, 2015 – December 31, 2016. During investment simulation, the portfolio rebalancing policies were divided into 4 groups; 1) rebalancing policy quarterly 2) rebalancing policy semi-annually 3) rebalancing policy annually and 4) no rebalancing policy. This study assumed that the beginning of capital investment for each portfolio was 1,000,000 baht.
The result of this study revealed that rebalancing policy annually yielded the best performance for portfolios with risky assets. Rebalancing policy too often might have been less effective because of short term volatility of this type of asset classes. However, no balancing policy generated the highest performance for portfolios with low risk assets, due to the fact that this asset class exhibited some stability and little volatility. Therefore, selecting appropriate rebalancing policy to asset classes would make expected return preferences possible. |
