Title: Rhetorical sensitivity and communication competence : a test for convergent validity
Authors: Dilbeck, Keith Edward
Keywords: Rhetorical sensitivity
Issue Date: 2008
Publisher: Bangkok University
Abstract: This thesis investigates convergent validity between rhetorical sensitivity and communication competence. The two constructs appear conceptualized in almost exactly the same the same way. Where a rhetorically sensitive person balances noble self and rhetorical reflection, a competent communicator balances sociocommunicative orientations assertiveness and responsiveness, with respect to the communication situation. Testing for convergent validity safeguards against scientific redundancy, helping to avoid rediscovering findings already established. Also, applying conceptual framework to rhetorical sensitivity that leads to a clearer fit of measures through communication competence may significantly assist in further development. A Pearson’s correlation coefficient is employed to obtain results. There are statistically significant measures, but convergent validity was not evidenced.
