Avoidance of evil deeds, performance of good deeds and purification of one’s mind were the teaching of all Buddhas, said Gotama Buddha. Translated into behavior, the teaching means three methods of merit, or Buddhist religiousness: observance of the Five Precepts, almsgiving to Buddhist monks and meditation. There has been no study into the beliefs that lead to Thai people’s Buddhist religiousness, the extent and the effect of their religiousness. This study hypothesizes that beliefs in merit and in the next life are related to Buddhist religiousness and Buddhist religiousness is in turn related to life satisfaction. The opposite belief, such as belief in the power of money or money consciousness, is negatively related to Buddhist religiousness. Data were collected from three sample groups. The first group (shopper) consisted of 400 shoppers at shopping centers in Bangkok. The second group (giver) consisted of 400 people who went to a temple to make merit by giving alms to the monks and donating money and articles of necessity to the temples. The third group (meditator) was 384 people who went to a temple to meditate. Instruments were developed to measure the extent of their observance of the Five Precepts, alms-giving and meditation, belief in the next life, money consciousness and life satisfaction. Factor analysis was used to validate the concepts and Cronbach alpha was used to measure the scales’ reliability. Social and demographic differences were found among the three groups. The shopper group was young, single and educated at bachelor’s degree level. The giver group was older, married and earned higher income. The meditator group consisted largely of women and was educated at lower than bachelor’s degree level. The results showed that the shopper group scored lowest in observance of the Five Precepts, alms-giving and meditation, followed by the giver group. The meditator group scored highest in all measurements. Beliefs in merit and in the next life were related to Buddhist religiousness that was in turn related to life satisfaction. Money consciousness was negatively related to Buddhist religiousness. The low incidence of merit making among shoppers suggests that shopping centers should provide an opportunity for shoppers to make by providing a room where a Buddha image may be found and where shoppers can make merit by praying or making donations. The limitation of this research was its investigation among people in the capital city; a study with a sample group in the provincial area might have produced a different picture of Thai people’s Buddhist religiousness. Also, an increasing number of foreigners are now turning to Buddhism; a research among them presents an opportunity to investigate their beliefs in merit, in the next life and their Buddhist religiousness.
